Title: More eBay fakes
Post by: wwwww on January 13, 2013, 09:19:16 PM
A modern Chinese copy (a dangerously convincing one too):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Australian-One-Florin-Two-Shilling-1931-/330856018229?pt=UK_Coins_World_RL&hash=item4d088e3135

I'm pretty sure his other coins are fake too.

I thought the rough surfaces were a giveaway - looked like it was cast.

And is the 1931 florin fake because of the inconsistent weakness in the portrait?

To me the numbers in the date look to have rounded surfaces, iykwim.

The obverse of the 1931 doesn't look right (details are there but they aren't precise), the surfaces are consistent with some fakes I've seen.

excuse my ignorance, and I am just a novice, but how do you know they are fake besides the obvious that a person with a zero rating comes out of the blue with several rare coins?

Is the fact that the writing on the 2x2 says SWAN DORRAR a givaway that the seller is Chinese? :laugh2: On a more serious note I'm not even certain that it would be easy to get a conviction for faking the swan dollar as they were never official coins (but the cops should check sleezebay daily for fake coins and promptly arrest the sellers for passing fake coins).

What is the legal situation?
Chinese copies of, for example, 1925, 1930, 1937 and 1946 pennies are on eBay with "copy", "replica" (or some such) shown as being stamped on them. They are actually shipped without the stamp and treated to look aged. Is it legal; to possess one of those or is it only an offense to try to pass one off as genuine?
And what about the only two demonetised Australian coins -the Holy Dollar and the Dump? Same as above (whatever that may be) or a different law?

I see what you mean, some crazy stuff going on. Florins that were described as copies albeit at the bottom of the listing, and sold for $10, look more authentic than others that sold for up to $2,000.

It's criminal if they have reasonable reason to believe they're fake.

If they got plethora of reports then they would have been required to investigate it.

Not exactly a fake but certainly misrepresented. RARE1927 FLORIN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT HOUSE COIN NO DATE VALUABLE ANY CONDITION (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RARE1927-FLORIN-AUSTRALIAN-PARLIAMENT-HOUSE-COIN-NO-DATE-VALUABLE-ANY-CONDITION-/152949091779?hash=item239c79edc3%3Ag%3A%7EqsAAOSw-09aQvpJ&nma=true&si=Z%252Fx1dy9SY6LjXFMw9GkZ7W1v5XM%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)
I put the silver value of a well worn pre-1945 florin at about $7. That's all it's worth. Remnants of the date can still be seen.

He had to relist it four times before some gullible bidders came along. Sad really.
Also had $170 buy it now price on it!

I don't use Facef*** as they sell your info. But there are fake 1966 50 cents on Aliexpress.com for US 1.56 (with free shipping to Australia by China Post ordinary small packet). So they are selling us fake legal tender and then we subsidise their postage
Only found that Chinese government permitted site when researching the '38 crown  (US 1.08 each). If you want them they also have 1916 mule halfpence. 1921 overdate and all the other scarce and rare dates. But wait, there's more...you can also purchase common date (1934, 1936) florins that look VF (great for padding out bulk lots). Not one is stamped COPY. :@

Disgusting how Chinese are cloning/copying everything and worst is that eBay allow it and Australian coin collectors are being conned  :@

What if the TPG's kicked off a registry set for fakes, and if you could show you were ripped off by a certain amount on a predetermined sliding scale, you would then attract whatever bonus points were relevant for that particular level  :yahoo:    :dodgy:

Rather than name these people, (fakes), here in open forum, why not send a pm to those that are prepared to do the same as you.

Yes Interest, if the Chinese army has not blown that joint up for making Chinese fakes, they are probably still in buisness.
My joke was always that when you order from them on the net  all they want to know is how many do you want and what grade?
Any Aussie coin. you name it.............38 crowns, 30 pennies, 20s Sovereigns, 45 pennies, 1909 florins, holey dollars, 21od 3ds.......
There was a net seller called Amazon "Lucys Coins" or some such and most coins were just dollars to buy and locals sell them for any amount that works on ebay. Just order and we send!!
Selling fakes that are obviuos seems to have died, now they go for coins you cannot tell the difference  between dud and genuine unless you know the coin well and are aware of die markers etc. Like we are now with the 1930 penny, the dodgy brother sellers have given up trying to flog off dud 1930's.
Some collectors reckon that most 34/35 florins and 38 crowns on ebay are fakes.
Buyer beware!
Fred.
