Have this one, a 1963 penny with what looks like reeding in some parts around the edge. Any thoughts.

Interesting again Gnome, not sure myself, double rim intriguing, so will leave it for others to comment

Thanks Basil, :) toying with a few ideas, one of which could still be pmd, although a 2nd one has turned up now as well.

Pretty bizarre, even looks a bit like reversed lettering. The funny things we find.

My initial impression is that its not PMD.
Wouldn't be surprised to see more interesting varieties appear for this date.
63 pennies were a dodgy strike in general.

My thinking says the marks, (reeding) occurred during the rolling of the rim on the planchet from foreign materials. Or a secret code for ASIO operatives..lol.

echidna

Something looks different with the denticles about 4 o'clock.
Cant quite make it out on the pic.

I have a couple of other theories, I am still working on, slowly. 1 is the possibility a struck florin was restruck with penny dies causing some damage to the collar die, or 2. a florin collar was retooled or modified to become a penny die collar. Unsure on both of those atm. Thought about the rimming process from the upset mill machine and that hasn't been eliminated entirely either, however with the second example turning up and the same area is affected, sort of narrowed it down to the collar die, now. Be interesting to see if any others turn up in a bit better condition. The thing is with these theories is these 63's were struck at the Perth Mint.

Yes,i have boxes of 1960 pennies,i'll have a look this w/end to see if i have any similar coins.

I've never seen this Coin mentioned anywhere over the years, strange it hasn't been ID given the attention pre-decimal gets, easy to pick with the light strike on the '1'.

Edit..03/07...I checked my 1963 Pennies, over 20,no similar Coin although a couple have the weak '1' in the date.
I'm not sure its not PMD but will keep an eye out for a similar Coin.

Can't see a struck florin damaging a penny collar. Even 50% alloy silver is not that hard compared to bronze and a collar would be much harder (tool steel)

The "reeding" does not look evenly spaced. My assumption on seeing this would be PMD, simply because there's no way to put just a tiny amount of reeding onto a coin, without creating a die like a $2 collar die that only has a tiny amount of reeding on it. It's as if the coin was stuck in a vise rimwise and squeezed, but I assume there's "reeding" only at that one spot, and not on two spots opposite each other?
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

Thanks sapyx, there is more reeding in some areas, not as prominent as that spot pictured. No not opposite each other, probably about 3 to 4 o'clock and 11 to 12 o'clock areas.
Not as clear a shot as I had hoped for. Can be seen in the hand though.

Yes :) I wasn't sold on that theory myself to tell the truth. Was just a passing thought .
