1923 Half Penny

My newest purchase everyone and I am sending it off to get authenticated and slabbed. Confident its real as the guy who sold it to me is very rich and has a massive Aussie coin collection he has been selling off (The 1936 Florin in silver saturday is also ex his collection).

He says he bought it at a Nobles auction in 2008 or 2009 and paid A$1950 for it, I paid $1,500 NZ pesos for it.

Tell me if you think its not the full quid, as the guy will refund me, he won't be happy as Nobles will have to answer for it. 

The coin is on very dark bronze suggesting a Sydney rather than Melbourne minting and the date looks good, 2 firiends who collect it have already said this is the real McCoy. the coin grades a bare fine.

Yes,looks ok,i've seen the dark patina on genuine 23 's before and IIRC no die cracks on them for some reason.

Thank you!  My friend who sold it will be glad. I just find it strange as most of my $1000+ coins are either big silver things or gold, its the first time, its been an old halfpenny!

From your pics, the coin looks good to me and if he bought it from Nobles in 2009 I would have seen it then.
By the way all 1923 halfpennies were minted in Melbourne.

Thank you, I got confused over minting as Renniks has in its catalogue (Minted in Sydney and Melbourne). But yes after reading seems, Sydney was reduced to minting gold and the occasional silver coin by this stage. Melbourne was where most minting took place until 1965 with Canberra coming on board and of course Perth doing a lot of bronze.

But I like how you all can educate this Kiwi!

Yet very strangely, Mowbrays have a 1923 Half penny for sale in their latest auction and with a reserve of only NZ$400 ($335), its aFine and looks cleaned with some verdigris, but that price is stupidly low.

However if any of you want a cheap 1923, here's your chance, us Kiwis don't really value Australian classics that highly.

Can't afford it right now, and takes too long. I am guessing my coin is a bare Fine grade.
