Introducing Collecting To Kids

Wish me luck, tomorrow I introduce my kids to the world of coin collecting!

They know I collect coins, and they love getting coins to put into their money boxes. Tomorrow they start looking at coins and sticking them in an album!

Well done Naomi.  What ages are they?  

I think a good way to introduce young 'uns to numismatics is with themed coins, animals in general or more specifically, birds, fish, butterflies, reptiles or perhaps hobby related themes, maybe boats/ships Churches, or whatever theme might grab and hold their attention.

I'd be happy to help out with some coins, just let us know if there's anything we can do to help them along the way. :icon_e_biggrin:

My son is 5 and a half, and my daughter is 3 and a half (I know she's too young, but it's just easier to let her join in than have a fight!)

I got 2 of those scholastic 50cent coin collection book-albums where you press the commemoration coins in. I think they will be excited to go through coins to find the different pictures on them.

I do have all the sets of young collectors coins (space, etc) and the Wiggles ones (Grrr, don't even get me started on Wiggles these days).

My kids are now 14 and 12 and I have thus far given them a little interest in collecting coins.  They each have their own album and I have brought my son some interesting coins because he has stated an interest in them.

While I can lead them to my interest - I think it will be up to them to take it up.  Time will tell how sucessful I am.
