Given that so many of the original round 50c are extant its possible that any double bars are as well.
This thread would greatly benefit from the display of more pictures
P.S. got any pics of 1966 double bars stevo?
Yeah I have quite a few UNC raw coins so will go through them later today and see if I have any pronounced examples and post a picture or 2

Excellent, thanks for that Steve. The double bars seem slightly different on these to the later years.

Virtually every 1966 50¢ I have looked at has some sign of double bars. The question is how pronounced do the bars have to be to call it a proper double bar rather than just a pretender?

Have a look at the link gnome added to his post on page 2 of this thread Jeff, The 1966 London Pattern 50c coin looks to be the real double bar.
Like you said most of the rest are pretty well "Pretenders" compared to the London coin, Including mine

I have several x 1966 50c pieces and all have very feint double bars on them.
The double bars on the 79/80 50c pieces are quite solid and distinct.
The 66 bars are very feint and one can generally see the bars on the 66 coins if one gets the light to reflect at the right angle.
