Mister T

Nice - that's quite an obvious one.

Yes Mr T.,as i've posted before i have almost 30 different final 3's on the 33 half,no one can offer an explanation what the Mint was trying to achieve/do.
Ian McConnelly was on to it,i sent him some USB Pics. shortly before he passed on,shame none of the other high profile Oz. Numismatists took an interest in this Coin as there must be a story behind the Mints repeated re-jigging of the final 3.

I'll give this Coin a bath to see if there is any more detail hiding under the muck.

There are a number of versions of the overdate penny.
Makes sense that there is a similar thing going on with the halfpennies.

Compared to all other predecimal hub number changed over dates. This attempt showed great workmanship after I presume many failed attempts at near perfection..

Pics. of the above Coin after a ultrasonic bath, slight remnants of a tip showing but nothing dramatic,i have better egs.

Owner of Coin in post 81 wanted it back,he knows someone who wanted to look at it so will give it a bath if i get it back down the track and post.

Fantastic improvement.
Pics are excellent too.

Basilstate

Thanks Ecci.
Another interesting Variety that our group found up here on the North Coast.First one i've seen showing the stem(like the Penny) of the 2.The top loop is reasonably clean.
Sad Ian McConnelly is not around to see these USB Pics.,he copped a lot of flack, mainly from 'éxperts' that are mostly self appointed,on his original artlicles on the 33 Half overdate.

Basilstate

I noticed this whilst sorting a bulk buy on the W/end.

Looks like a '1' under the first 3 of a 1933 Half but not sure what it is,anyone have a thoughts/views on it.Thanks.

Mister T

Almost looks like a strike through but hard to tell - is it raised or incuse?

Its raised Mr.T.,sits under the first 3,i never seen anything like it,local dealer was bemused,"possibly foreign object on Die" but that theory is a common 'cop-out' in most cases.

I remember reading somewhere quite awhile back sometimes coins were varnished or lacquered to keep them in good condition. Could it be something that has been removed from it at some stage. Played around with the image, hope that is ok.

Mister T

True, though I think it was mostly proofs that were lacquered.

I'm thinking die crack is the most obvious explanation but it looks too smooth.

gnome61

The varnishing and lacquering I was referring to was done by some older collectors outside of the minting process.

Hi Basil, possibly a remnant of a hub date change from 31 to 33.
Or else its a die/hub fracture that "looks" like a number part.
Good spotting! Well done.
That's another thing for me to look for when I get back to coin world.

Fred.

Basilstate

Thanks for the replies fellas, gives me something to think about.
Its not a serendipitous figure,it has shape with regular lines and sits under the 3,as Fred states its probably a Hub artifact of some kind but puzzling on what its doing under the first 3 ?.It was the final 3 that was worked on by the Mint.

Good to see you posting Fred, hope your health is Ok.
